Construction Accidents- Safety Measures

Because construction work in itself can be dangerous, it is extremely important for those working in the industry to take precautions to remain safe. The Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA) helps to regulate the work environment for those in construction and other fields; however, individuals can take extra measures to help ensure their safety.

Safety Precautions

To avoid becoming a victim of an on-the-job accident injury, workers in the construction field can use the following safety precautions to lesson their risks:

  • Alert the proper individuals of spills and hazards. When you notice a wet spot, unlevel surface, or other potentially dangerous hazard, alert other individuals working in that area so they do not get hurt, and notify whomever would be in charge of removing the obstacle.
  • Clean as you go. Sometimes injuries can be caused by tripping over trash or messes left over after the actual work is completed. By cleaning up areas whenever possible while working, injuries may be avoided.
  • Use equipment only as intended. Inappropriate use of equipment can lead to the most severe injuries. It is important to have the proper training on how to operate machinery before using it.
  • Wear safety gear. A vital element to working safely in a construction site is wearing safety gear at all times. Objects may fall unexpectedly, equipment may fail or backfire, and other events may occur that workers cannot prepare for. Therefore, you should take responsibility for your safety by doing what you can to protect yourself.

If you are involved in a construction accident, seek immediate medical attention for your injury. If possible, preserve evidence, gather contact information from witnesses, and report an occurrence immediately. These steps will help you build a case to recover damages from any liable party.
