$550,000 Settlement Secured by Sullivan Papain’s Nicole LaGrega in Hospital Infection Case

Sullivan Papain is pleased to announce a $550,000 settlement secured by attorney Nicole M. LaGrega on behalf of a patient who contracted a severe, life-threatening infection due to a hospital’s failure to take proper precautions to prevent the spread of disease. The resolution was reached on August 5, 2025, prior to the case entering the formal trial process.

The client, a 65-year-old man, initially visited the emergency department of a New York City hospital for treatment of a head injury sustained in a fall. Less than two weeks later, he sought care at a different medical facility after developing generalized weakness and fever. At first, his symptoms were presumed to be related to his prior injury. However, further testing revealed that he was suffering from a serious infection that he had contracted during his earlier hospital visit.

According to the claims, the infection was the result of the first hospital’s failure to follow established infection control protocols, which are designed to protect patients from exposure to contagious illnesses in medical settings. As a result, the client endured high fevers, progressive anemia, thrombocytopenia, and elevated bilirubin levels. His condition required aggressive treatment with both intravenous and oral antibiotics, as well as a prolonged hospitalization.

Ms. LaGrega negotiated a $550,000 settlement that will help compensate the client for the physical, emotional, and financial burdens caused by the infection.
