Sullivan Papain Secures $1.1 Million Settlement for Queens Man Who Suffered Stroke After Emergency Department Discharge
Sullivan Papain is proud to announce a $1.1 million settlement secured by Associate Ana-Marija Turkovic, Esq. on behalf of a 61-year-old Queens man who suffered an ischemic stroke shortly after being discharged from a hospital emergency department.
The plaintiff, a 61-year-old man with past medical history of hypertension, presented to the Emergency Department with a dangerously elevated blood pressure that remained uncontrolled despite receiving treatment that was not appropriate for the management of his condition. Plaintiff’s counsel retained an emergency medicine expert who opined that the defendant hospital and emergency department physicians departed from good and accepted medical practice by failing to adequately control the plaintiff’s blood pressure, perform a complete neurological evaluation, and admit him for continued treatment and monitoring. The expert further opined that appropriate intravenous treatment and monitoring would have stabilized his condition before discharge.
Plaintiff’s counsel retained an expert in neurology who linked defendants’ negligence to the plaintiff’s subsequent stroke and resulting permanent injuries, including speech, vision, balance, memory, and cognitive difficulties.
Ana-Marija Turkovic, Esq. negotiated the $1.1 million settlement on behalf of the plaintiff while the case was on the trial calendar in Queens.
