The unfortunate truth is that Uber and Lyft rides are not always safe. Recently, victims of sexual assault during these rides have spoken out by filing lawsuits alleging that Uber and Lyft failed to take necessary safety precautions such as:

  • Adequately screening their drivers
  • Implementing safety design changes to their apps
  • Timely and appropriately responding to passenger complaints
  • Removing drivers who they knew or should have known committed sexual assaults on their passengers

Uber and Lyft Rideshare Sexual Assault Investigation

With rideshare platforms such as Uber becoming such a popular mode of transportation throughout the country, instances of sexual assault and abuse have become more prevalent. These events raise questions about the safety measures being taken by the rideshare companies to properly and adeqautely protect their passengers. Despite the rideshare companies’ obligation to keep their passengers safe, there have been thousands of rideshare sex assault victims across the country:

  • Uber reported 9,805 instances of sexual assault from 2017 to 2020
  • Lyft reported 4,158 instances of sexual assault from 2017 to 2019

In October 2023, almost 80 lawsuits alleging groping, kidnapping, and rape by rideshare drivers were combined in federal court into an MDL known as the Uber Passenger Sexual Assault MDL in the Northern District of California.
