SPBMCC Attorneys Recover $2,250,000 for the Family of a Medical Malpractice Victim

April 5, 2021 in

On March 22, 2021, SPBMCC attorneys Eleni Coffinas and Elyssa Shifren reached a settlement totaling $2,250,000 for the family of a medical malpractice victim. The plaintiff, a 54-year-old mother of two adult children, passed away after defendants failed to diagnose her rare malignant spinal tumor.

About the Case

After complaining of leg pain, foot pain and numbness, the plaintiff underwent treatment with various physicians at different reputable institutions. None of the physicians recognized that her symptoms were caused by a malignant tumor in her spine. By the time her doctors properly diagnosed her tumor over one year later, her cancer was Stage IV with which she had developed lung metastasis.  She fought for a year and a half before succumbing to her disease.

About the Settlement

The plaintiff’s family began working with Eleni Coffinas, Elizabeth Montesano, and Elyssa Shifren, a team of medical malpractice attorneys at SPBMCC, to seek justice for her death, which may have been prevented if her condition had been diagnosed in a timely manner. The defendants moved to dismiss the case against them. However, SPBMCC attorneys on the case defeated these motions, and reached a settlement during a private mediation for a total of $2,250,000.

The settlement award will go towards supporting the plaintiff’s surviving family members and alleviating much of the financial burden associated with medical expenses and funeral costs. While a monetary settlement could never replace a loved one, this substantial reward will help support the plaintiff’s family financially as they navigate the grieving process.
