SPBMCC Attorneys Recover $2,577,825 Settlement for the Family of 9/11 Hero

February 25, 2021 in

The attorneys at Sullivan Papain Block McManus Coffinas & Cannavo P.C. recently obtained a substantial settlement for the family of a late emergency medical technician with the New York City Fire Department. The EMT and late claimant participated in the search, rescue and recovery efforts at Ground Zero for over 200 hours in the first two weeks of the tragic efforts surrounding 9/11. Below, our team of 9/11-related illness attorneys provides an overview of the case and the settlement that was reached to provide the victim’s family with solace and financial aid in their time of healing.

Husband, Father & EMT Aided in 9/11 Recovery Efforts, Passed Away in 2007

In the aftermath of 9/11, an EMT with the FDNY assisted in the debris removal and rescue efforts from the day of the attacks and continued working at Ground Zero through April 2002. In the first two weeks of the recovery efforts, the claimant participated without a respirator and proper protective equipment.

Ultimately, in August 2007, the claimant was diagnosed with lymphoma in the lung. He tragically passed away three months later, on November 26, 2007. He was 45 years old.

The brave EMT who risked his life to assist in the rescue and recovery efforts following 9/11 is survived by his wife and two children, ages 14 and 18.

Victim Was Not Equipped With Respirator During Recovery Efforts, Leading to His Cancer

Because the claimant was working gruesome and extensive 100-hour weeks in the early aftermath of 9/11 without being provided a respirator required to prevent disease, he later developed a fatal form of cancer. This condition had a direct correlation to the victim’s lack of proper protective equipment during the rescue and recovery efforts.

The victim’s family began working with a member of our firm in order to receive vital compensation to alleviate their pain and suffering as well as supplement the loss of income that occurred due to the claimant’s death. Our firm fought on behalf of the victim’s family, determined to recover the damages needed for the family to properly grieve and support themselves financially. The attorneys representing the victim’s family were able to recover a substantial settlement totaling $2,577,825 to aid them on their path to emotional healing and financial stability.

We honor and thank this brave 9/11 first responder for his heroic efforts in the aftermath of 9/11 and the sacrifice he made to help others during and following the infamous day in American history. He is remembered as a hero—a hero who put his health and safety on the line so he could save others. We thank you for your efforts.
