Sullivan Papain Member Eleni Coffinas Secures $2.7 Million Settlement in Medical Malpractice Case
Sullivan Papain is proud to announce that firm Member Eleni Coffinas obtained a $2.7 million settlement on behalf of a woman whose cancer diagnosis was dangerously delayed due to medical negligence.
In 2019, the plaintiff underwent an endometrial biopsy to evaluate abnormal findings. The pathology results indicated that cancer could not be excluded and required immediate follow-up. However, those results were never communicated to the patient for more than 15 months. During that critical period, she continued without appropriate diagnostic evaluation or treatment.
When the oversight was finally discovered, the patient was diagnosed with Stage 1B, Grade 2 endometrial cancer, requiring a hysterectomy and radiation therapy. While she has since been clinically cancer-free for nearly five years, she endured significant physical and emotional hardship that could have been prevented had her medical providers acted promptly and responsibly.
Ms. Coffinas demonstrated that multiple healthcare providers, including a medical practice, physician, and nurse practitioner, failed in their duty to communicate vital biopsy results and ensure timely follow-up care. The settlement was reached with the defendants contributing collectively to the $2.7 million resolution.
