Sullivan Papain Secures $2.1 Million Settlement in Delayed Breast Cancer Diagnosis Case
Sullivan Papain is pleased to report that firm member Eleni Coffinas secured a $2,100,000 settlement in December, 2025, in a medical malpractice case arising out of Nassau County.
The case involved a 47-year-old married woman and mother of a teenage child whose breast cancer diagnosis was delayed due to a misinterpreted mammogram. At the time of her initial imaging, there were suspicious findings present that warranted immediate further evaluation and diagnostic follow-up. However, the mammogram was incorrectly interpreted as normal, and no additional testing or intervention was recommended.
Approximately eight months later, after the patient experienced a noticeable physical change in her breast, she underwent further evaluation and was diagnosed with breast cancer, diminishing her chance of long-term survival.
Her course of treatment included a double mastectomy, followed by chemotherapy and radiation therapy. She is currently clinically cancer free.
The case was brought on the basis that the failure to properly interpret the initial mammogram and to timely act on suspicious findings constituted a departure from accepted medical standards. Early detection is critical in the treatment of breast cancer, and delays can alter the course of care and overall prognosis.
At the time of settlement, the case was on the trial calendar in Nassau County. The matter was resolved for $2,100,000.
Eleni Coffinas served as both Responsible Attorney and Trial Attorney on the case, securing a meaningful recovery for the client and holding the responsible parties accountable while helping provide financial support as the patient continues forward after her cancer journey.
