Sullivan Papain’s Eleni Coffinas Secures $2 Million Settlement in Medical Malpractice Case

On September 24th, 2024, Sullivan Papain attorney Eleni Coffinas successfully obtained a $2 million settlement for a plaintiff who experienced a delayed breast cancer diagnosis due to medical negligence.

In September, our plaintiff, a 67-year-old married woman, presented to her OB/GYN with a palpable mass in her left breast. Her doctor referred her for a mammogram and sonogram, which were interpreted as normal. A follow-up mammogram and sonogram six months later were also mistakenly deemed benign.

In May 2020, the plaintiff experienced bleeding from her left nipple. Further investigation revealed that plaintiff had breast cancer and it spread to two lymph nodes. She subsequently underwent a double mastectomy followed by radiation therapy. The plaintiff did not require chemotherapy and remains cancer-free to date.

Sullivan Papain Firm Member Eleni Coffinas argued that the plaintiff’s OB/GYN should have referred her to a breast surgeon for further evaluation, as negative imaging results did not rule out breast cancer. It was also contended that the radiologist misinterpreted the mammogram and sonogram results. The delayed diagnosis diminished the plaintiff’s overall chance of a cure.

A $2 million settlement was awarded to compensate for the delay in diagnosing the cancer and its subsequent impact on the plaintiff’s health.
