Coffinas and Shifren Secure a $900,000 Settlement for Victim of Medical Malpractice

In a King’s County on April 8th, 2021, SPBMCC Firm Partner Eleni Coffinas and Associate Elyssa Shifren obtained a $900,000 settlement for a medical malpractice victim who suffered nerve damage during surgery.
Malpractice During Surgery Leads to Patient’s Foot Drop
The patient, who is a man in his 30’s, had undergone varicose vein surgery. As a result of the surgery, he suffered nerve damage from the procedure, which led to foot drop. Foot drop is the inability to lift the front part of the foot, and it is not a common complication from varicose vein surgery.
The complications from the surgical procedure ultimately impaired the plaintiff’s ability to walk, as foot drop impacts the ability to clear the foot from the ground when walking. The plaintiff experienced a significant disruption in almost all daily activities, as most were dependent on the ability to walk.
SPBMCC Attorneys Obtain $900,000 Settlement to Relieve Plaintiff’s Financial Burdens
The plaintiff worked closely with firm Partner and medical malpractice litigation leader Eleni Coffinas, as well as firm Associate Elyssa Shifren, to obtain a settlement for his injuries. Within two sessions of private mediation, the SPBMCC team secured a settlement of $900,000 to compensate for the plaintiff’s pain and suffering. While the settlement cannot undo the malpractice that led to the plaintiff’s physical limitations, it will help cover the financial burdens and medical expenses associated with his foot drop.
