On April 9, 2021, top trial advocate Eleni Coffinas continued her streak of successful results when she obtained a one million dollar settlement for a medical malpractice victim who suffered complications from a laparoscopic hysterectomy.
Plaintiff Suffers Bowel Injuries From Laparoscopic Procedure
In 2015, a 65-year-old single, retired school teacher underwent a routine laparoscopic hysterectomy. During the procedure, her bowel was injured and medical professionals did not discover the injury for six days. Due to complications, the doctors had to perform an exploratory laparotomy to detect the injury.
The exploratory laparotomy discovered that the plaintiff would need a bowel resection. Doctors performed the resection and the victim required an ileostomy bag for 7 months. The plaintiff then underwent a third surgery, which removed the ileostomy bag. She has not experienced any complications since the third surgery, although she is at risk for small bowel obstructions. These obstructions may come from adhesions caused by the complexity of multiple surgeries.
