Sullivan Papain Partner, Walling and Trial Counsel, Wilkens Recover $5.5 Million in Medical Negligence Case

A 66-year-old Suffolk County man suffered significant brain damage and lost the opportunity to have a kidney transplant as a result of improper treatment while in the hospital for a cardiac procedure.

66-Year-Old Man Loses Opportunity for Kidney Transplant, Quality of Life

The plaintiff, who was 59 years old at the time, underwent a necessary cardiac procedure so that he could later undergo a kidney transplant relieving him of the necessity of dialysis. Due to the failure of the health care providers, such as the Anesthesiology and Cardiology providers, inability to recognize the patient’s special needs and take the precautionary measures required during the cardiac procedure, including careful and strict monitoring of his response to anesthetic medications, the plaintiff was placed in a state of general anesthesia, causing him to stop breathing, resulting in a cardiac arrest which resulted in a loss of blood flow to his brain and irreversible brain damage.

Loss of Blood Flow Leads to Life-Altering Changes

The man was previously active in his community, a known community organizer.  He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. However, the loss of blood flow to the brain left him with severe brain damage. His life has been forever altered from one of a vibrant man helping others in the community to one who will forever need assistance for all activities of daily living.
