Eleni Coffinas Obtains $1.5 Million in Medical Malpractice Case

February 8, 2023 in

On June 23, 2022, SPBMCC attorney Eleni Coffinas successfully obtained a $1.5 million settlement for an 81-year-old woman who was given the wrong prescription instructions leading to a stroke, decreased mobility, and the need for assistance with daily living.

81-Year-Old Plaintiff Undergoes Vein Stenting Procedure

An 81-year-old woman underwent a vein stenting procedure. While she was meant to take one Plavix blood thinner pill the day before her procedure, she was instead given a six-month prescription with monthly renewals. This led her to take 180 Plavix instead of the one that was required even though she was an existing user of daily low-dose aspirin and there is a potential for reactions.

No Longer Able to Perform Daily Tasks Alone

The morning after the vein stenting procedure, the plaintiff had an intracerebral hemorrhage, which we argued was due to the coagulopathy associated with taking aspirin and Plavix together. As a result of the stroke, the plaintiff has decreased mobility and needs assistance with all aspects of daily living. Her son and an aide help to take care of her.

SPBMCC Partner Eleni Coffinas On Behalf of the Plaintiff

The plaintiff sought legal representation through the medical malpractice unit at SPBMCC, and Partner Eleni Coffinas was the trial attorney.  The parties reached a total settlement of $1.5 million in Kings County Supreme Court.

The settlement will compensate the plaintiff for the pain, suffering, and additional treatment needed due to incorrect prescription dosage and reaction.
