New York Personal Injury Attorneys

UFA General Counsel

For firefighters, Sullivan Papain is probably a familiar name: During nearly four decades, the firm has represented the Uniformed Firefighters Association (UFA), and firm member Michael Block serves as the union’s general counsel. Over the years, we have served the UFA at Union meetings and beyond.

From defending firefighters at BITs and EFO to helping them and their families when they have been in an accident, SPBMC are the firefighters go-to attorneys.

The team includes Michael N. Block, a member of the firm who has for many years served as general counsel to the UFA. Mr. Block has been a leading lawyer in the area of fire-related litigation for 40 years and has been an essential advocate on behalf of firefighters and their families who have suffered injuries in the line of duty.

Firm member Thomas J. McManus also works closely with UFA on a daily basis, helping defend the rights of firefighters on the job and defending union members injured while performing their duties.

And Nicholas Papain, the firm’s managing member and one of New York’s most prominent personal injury lawyers. Mr. Papain played a major role in negotiating a $700 million settlement for 9/11 World Trade Center first responders who brought suit against the City of New York and its contractors for failing to provide proper respiratory equipment during rescue and recovery efforts.

Robert G. Sullivan is the firm’s senior member, is a pioneer in personal injury law and in litigation on behalf of firefighters. He represented the widows and children of six firefighters killed in a Waldbaum’s supermarket fire in Brooklyn. And has won millions on behalf of injured New Yorkers since joining the firm in 1972.

Vito Cannavo is a member of the firm who has won a string of multi-million dollar verdicts for clients in medical malpractice, premises liability, motor vehicle and firefighter-related litigation, including a historic $183 Million verdict against the City of New York arising out of the tragic Bronx “Black Sunday Fire.”
